This Weekend

I'm heading to Montgomery, Alabama this morning for the Miss Alabama USA and Teen USA pageants. Yep. It's my job to be surrounded by smoking' hot chicks for 48 hours after spending 6 months talking to them on the phone, getting to know their parents, and creeping on their Facebook pages. I've really grown to love the world of pageantry, and I am SO excited to finally meet all my Alabama ladies. =)

If you've ever had any sort of preconceived notions about pageant girls, hop on over to Megan's blog, Style Me Swanky. She used to compete in one of our pageants and she's one of the smartest and most kind-hearted ladies I "know." And I started reading her blog before I even worked for the pageant company!

I'll be back on Monday with an update.

Here are some of my favorite photos from the other two pageants - I'll be back stage taking behind the scenes photos in Alabama, too.

Alright, y'all! Have a safe weekend! And follow me on Twitter if you want to see updates from the pageant. =)

Spamlot

So, when I started my photography website I set up comment moderation. That way, every comment came to my email before it went live on the post. In hindsight, I probably should have set up a better spam filter so that stuff like what I'm about to show you would just automatically get deleted.

It started out innocent enough -

Not so bad...clearly spam but not obnoxious or anything. Just completely irrelevant to any of my posts (which are all about photography).

Then it got weird.

I automatically envision an elderly midget...

And this last one is my favorite and/or the creepiest -

Uh....WHAT? Borderline terrifying.

Do y'all get weird spam comments?

When the cat's away...

Mike worked until 10 last night...so naturally I swung by Hobby Lobby on my way home, picked up some discount fabric, and made pillow cases to match the new curtains and paint! Mind you - I'm no pillow aficionado...so these are imperfect and were not even remotely planned ahead of time...

How was your Monday?

CURTAINSSSS WHAT?

So remember the cubby I mentioned? Here's another sneak peek. I still haven't managed to take a decent photo of it. But we DID get a super awesome coat rack from Pier 1. We've always been bad about piling up jackets and things on the back of our chair but I couldn't stand it any longer. So we've got the coat rack. I also added a basket on top of the cubby to act as Mike's catch all...now he has a spot to put his wallet and gun and Sheriffy things when he gets home from work. I'm trying my best to avoid turning our new dining table into a storage zone like the old one. So far, no scratches!
And here's a quick look at the new curtains in the dining room. We put matching ones up in the living room...and as soon as I get the giant trash pile by the front door taken outside, I'll try to get some pictures.

Most boring post ever? Cool.

I blatantly lied to y'all

On Monday I told you to look out for some posts about the house. Then I never had the chance to take any photos while it was still light outside. I REFUSE to take pictures of the house with flash. So...I'll take pictures over the weekend and have some posts lined up next week.

In the mean time, here's an Instagram update of the past several days.

Mike and I have decided to start running together during the week. Yesterday was our first day. I asked him to run with me several times last fall and he always said no (I'm slow, he's fast...it doesn't really work), so I'm happy that he's had a change of heart. Apparently running is good for you? So even if he runs during the day with his Sheriffy friends, he's still going to run with me in the evenings. =) Yesterday AM he had a PT test for work and ran an 8 minute mile and still came home and ran 2 miles with me.

If you use RunKeeper to track your runs, join my street team!

Plus, Bella loves the extra attention and time with us away from the kitties. =)
Sunset after our run.

Here's a sneak peak of the cubby update I promised:

Mike and I are also making an effort to do things together other than sitting on the couch and watching endless episodes of How I Met Your Mother.
And Moose is getting bigger by the day. Sad face.

Also, my boss' daughter was hanging out with us this week, which meant I got to love on her adorable Yorkie pup, Lily. She sat on my lap and grilled at me for a little bit.

Mama Rice takes over Aiken

My mom came to stay over the weekend and MUCH was accomplished.

Wedding invites are in the mail.
The wedding bands have been purchased.
Hair and make-up appointments have been made.
And a bunch of other stuff.

Needless to say, we spent a lot of time in Hobby Lobby and the likes this weekend.

We also took down the Christmas tree...and in an effort to cling to my last little bit of Christmas, we got Bella a discounted penguin toy.
Then I took a picture of myself in the bathroom. Cool.

The time my mom and I broke my dining table in half...

Side note: Did anyone else go all day Friday without even realizing it was the 13th?

My mom came to visit, and somewhere between dusting all of the furniture and taking down the Christmas tree, we decided to see what my table looked like with butterfly leaf pulled out.
That's not what it's supposed to look like. RIP old dining room table.

The thing would NOT budge. We got it almost all the way pulled out and then couldn't get it the last inch or so. I even got out the rubber mallet to try and coax it with some tough love. NO LUCK. Eventually after enough tugging and straining, we got it apart. And only broke ALL of the plastic fixtures in the process. Poor little table just completely gave up and quit life. So it's sitting in three parts in one of the spare bedrooms.

ANYWAY -

Since it was technically all my mom's fault, she decided to replace the table for us. The whole dining room got a face lift! YAY.
Yes, I know those light bulbs look totally ridiculous but they're good for the electric bill (and the environment...)

We went to Hobby Lobby and scored the adorable basket and flowers. The flowers were all 50% off - y'all know how I feel about Hobby Lobby and their sales. (See here, here, or here) HEAVEN. We bought a florist block, I arranged the flowers, and stuck it in the basket with some fake moss.

Moose was an instant fan of the new centerpiece.
I picked out some really nice gold/metallic snakeskin looking place mats at Pier 1 and absolutely adore them. They look maaaarvelous on the dark wood table and with the gold pick-ups in the basket.
We went out to dinner and when we got home we discovered that an accent feather in the centerpiece had fallen victim to ones of Moose's tyrannical rampages. Sad face.

Stay tuned for the following updates this week:

-Living Room & Dining Room CURTAINS, YAYSIES!
-Hand-built basket cubby (that I assembed all on my own)
-Coat Rack - omg so exciting!

Are you yawning yet?

I feel like I need to clarify...

Last week I posted about the bite incident of 2012. I've since deleted the post and it's related comments because I realized after the fact that my thoughts could easily be misconstrued. I didn't want to hurt Mike's feelings. Of course I realized this after said feelings had already been hurt.

I got quite a few comments and emails about the situation and feel the need to clarify three things:

1. Mike would never abuse our pets.
2. Mike would NEVER abuse our pets.
3. I love my pets more than is socially acceptable.
I think the point I was trying to make in the post was that I didn't know whether Bella bit him out of fear or anger. They are two totally different scenarios. I was hoping it was out of fear and a result of Mike's raised voice combined with the fact that she KNEW she was in trouble (she's well aware that trash-digging is frowned upon and gets sulky as soon as she realizes she's been caught. She's a smart dog, y'all), and NOT that she was being aggressive for the sake of being aggressive - because that is totally out of her character and I really don't think she's got any sort of mean-ness in her. I know now that it was the former and even though I can't completely walk away from the fact that she bit a person, I know that it's fixable and won't happen again.
I wasn't questioning Mike's actions/reactions, and I know that he wouldn't ever intentionally hurt Bella. He trains Bloodhounds on a daily basis. He's the one that picked out both of our kittens. He is the most soft-hearted man I know, and when he's not doing something masculine or disgusting, he's cuddling on the couch with me and the cats. Because he's that great.

When I first posted about the bite, I was really sad. Sad because I wish I had been there to let Bella know that we love her even if she was in trouble for eating the trash. Sad because I wish she hadn't bitten Mike, and sad because as much as I wanted to make both of them feel better, I couldn't. Bella is my baby and no matter how much trouble she gets in, I always apologize to her - I HAVE to make sure she knows I love her. That's so important to me. So that was the dilemma - being angry at her about the bite, but feeling the urge to let her know that I still love her.
Anyway, it was never about what Mike did. It was about what Bella did.

Chaaaanges

We made some changes to the living room. Again. So I thought I'd do a "living room through the ages" post.

Too bad for you, I never took a picture of the living room when there was a pool table in the middle of the floor instead of a couch.

When I moved in (but before Mike's furniture got the heave-ho and mine took over), it looked like this,
Then it looked like this,
This weekend we painted the back wall slate blue and the other walls a lighter color cream. Remember the pool table I mentioned? Well, through the years of Mike's prime bachelor-dom, the walls had fallen pray to many a blue-chalk fingertip and abusive pool cue. They were scarred with blue marks and scratches and needed a face-lift somethin' fierce.
We also painted the awkward wall between the dining room and living room to sort of tie it all together. It works really well. I wasn't 100% satisfied with the frames on the wall above the couch. I think they were too small for the space, so I spent some time on Monday evening rearranging.
(Instagram pic...)
I hung the mirror all by myself. I AM WOMAN.

Anyway. I love how the house feels when we finish a project. Next up? The front door and yard - I'd love to add some curb appeal to our little ranch-style corner-house. Then The master bathroom. Then the deck/back yard. Then the kitchen.
